We are proud to support the LGBTQ+ community! People who identify as LGBTQ+ fall victim to domestic violence at equal or even higher rates than their heterosexual counterparts. However, unfortunately, domestic violence advocacy to the LGBTQ+ community is often left in the shadows. The facts are staggering: according to ncadv.org, 61.1% of bisexual women and 43.8% of lesbian women have experienced stalking, physical violence, and rape by an intimate partner at some point in their lifetime, as opposed to 35% of heterosexual women. And, 37.3% of bisexual men and 26% of gay men have experienced stalking, physical violence, and rape by an intimate partner in their lifetime, as opposed to 29% of heterosexual men. LGBTQ+ individuals may experience unique forms of domestic violence as well as distinctive barriers to seeking help due to fear of discrimination or bias.
We believe that everyone, including members of the LGBTQ+ community, deserves to live a life free from abuse. That is why Haven Hills is planning to implement an LGBTQ+ support group in the fall through a partnership with the Los Angeles LGBT Center. We hope to break down these barriers to safety by incorporating the unique needs of this community into the programs we provide and in this way, offer supportive and caring assistance to this special community.
